Paramotoring is Paragliding with an

auxiliary motor attached to the pilot. The CAA has defined this recently

legitimized form of powered flight as a foot launched self-propelled Hang

glider (SPHG). This does not mean that Paramotors are deregulated, They still

have to comply with all U.K. aviation law, and some specific restrictions of

their own (Click Image to read PDF syllabus here). However these small aircraft

allow you the freedom of the skies, with less red tape and costs than any other

powered aircraft. With the ability to be able to take off from a small flat

field and climb a Paramotor can fly just like any other aircraft. Para motors

can have enough fuel to fly for between 2.5 - 4 hrs, can climb to around 500'

per minute and fly at between 25 to 45 mph. At Axis training we have a lot of

experience with Paramotoring, our first flights were in 1993 on Scobojets, and

we have learned a lot and developed great teaching techniques ever since. We

prefer if possible to have most of our Paramotorists, learn as much on the

paraglider as they can prior to flying a Paramotor. This helps them become much

better, safer and more confident pilots.

Powered paragliders are useful as

replacements for terrestrial vehicles in difficult terrain. In some areas

during the spring when the sea or lakes are still frozen but the ice has begun

melting, the waters cannot be walked, skied, or driven on and cannot be

navigated by boat. Hydrocopters, hovercraft, and aircraft are the only ways to

travel in such conditions. Furthermore, if the landscape is fractured by small

and shallow lakes and bays, as in swamplands, it may be difficult to navigate

even in good conditions. Observation and counting of protected species, e.g.

Saimaa ringed seal, in such conditions has been conducted using a powered

paraglider.


Another use that has been demonstrated is

the herding of reindeer. Although the tundra is open terrain, there are no

roads and the terrain is still uneven. A powered parachute can be used instead

of a snowmobile or a motorcycle.

Paramotor is the generic name for the

harness and propulsive portion of a powered paraglider ("PPG"). There

are two basic types of paramotors: foot launch and wheel launch.


Foot launch models consist of a frame with

harness, fuel tank, engine, and propeller. A hoop with protective netting

primarily keeps lines out of the propeller. The unit is worn like a large

backpack to which a Paraglider is attached through carabiners.


Wheel launch units either come as complete

units with their own motor, or as an add-on to a foot launch paramotor. They

usually have 3 (trike) or 4 (quad) wheels, with seats for one or two occupants.

These should not be confused with Powered Parachutes which are generally much

heavier, more powerful, and have different steering.

taking you well beyond the minimum requirements giving all pilots a solid

foundation.


Our Paramotoring course starts out learning

the techniques and skills involved in Paragliding. After several hours of

ground handling, you can expect to take your first solo flights at our private

training field. When you have mastered your launching, landing and basic glider

skills, you will progress to your motor training.

This sport has evolved and now many

advanced pilots perform extreme maneuvers such as wing-overs, barrel rolls and

loops. These types of maneuvers present a significant danger as any type of

negative G's encountered will unload the wing allowing the wings lines to go

slack. Only very advanced pilots with years of experience, training and coupled

with countermeasures such as reserve parachutes should attempt such maneuvers.

A reserve parachute is a highly recommended piece of equipment which may

prevent significant injury or death in the presence of a malfunction of the

equipment or a mistake made by the pilot.



Powered paragliding, also known as

paramotoring or PPG, is a form of ultralight aviation where the pilot wears a

back-mounted motor (a paramotor) which provides enough thrust to take off using

a paraglider. It can be launched in still air, and on level ground, by the

pilot alone — no assistance is required.
